This Week's Parsha
Shelach
This Dessert:
Challah
There is a mitzvah to give a portion of dough to the Kohen every time you make a large amount of bread.
What You Need:
Ingredients
Roll-out cookie dough
Things
Lined cookie sheet
Parchment paper
How to Make It:
Separate a ¼ cup of dough from the cookie dough.
Roll into a ball and set aside on a lined cookie sheet.
Lay out a sheet of parchment paper on the counter.
Separate 3 walnut-sized balls of dough.
Roll each ball into a rope as long as possible.
Lay these ropes down parallel to each other on the parchment paper.
Pinch the far end of the ropes together.
Braid the ropes together like a challah.
Bring the left rope over the middle rope and lay it down in between the middle and right ropes.
Spread out the ropes evenly.
Then bring the right rope over the new middle rope and lay it down in between the middle and left ropes.
Spread out the ropes evenly again and continue braiding like this starting again with the left rope.
Continue until you reach the end of the ropes.
Then pinch the ends of the ropes together to seal off the ‘challah’.
Move the ‘challah’ to the lined cookie sheet.
Repeat steps 4-9 until you run out of dough.
Bake all the cookies, both the ‘challah’s and the ball, according to the recipe. Keep an eye on the cookies as they may bake differently than normal.
A Roll-Out Cookie Recipe:
Multi-Colored Cookies
Ingredients
3 ¼ cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
1 cup margarine
1 ⅓ cups sugar
2 eggs
2 ounces chocolate, melted (optional)
Your choice of flavorings/extracts
Your choice of food colorings
Directions
Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a small bowl.
In a separate large bowl cream together margarine and sugar.
Beat in eggs one at a time until smooth, light and fluffy.
Continue mixing and add in the dry ingredients in two parts.
Divide the dough based on the number of different flavors/colors, one part for each flavor/color.
Mix in a few drops of food coloring for color and about 1 teaspoon of extract to each portion. For chocolate dough knead the melted chocolate into its portion of dough.
Cover the dough and refrigerate for about 1 hour to firm up the dough.
Heat the oven to 350℉.
Arrange the colors into whatever design you desire. Either roll the dough into a log and slice ¼ inch thick cookies or roll the dough into a ¼ inch thick sheet in between 2 sheets of parchment paper and use cookie cutters to cut into the desired shape.
Place cookies on a parchment lined baking sheet.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until almost firm and very slightly browned.
